In learning French…. ? 10 pts?
Hi, i’ve been learning French for just over a month now. I’ve had some good progression, but am wondering
is learning grammaire formally (pluperfect subjunctive, passe particle, conjunctions…) the wrong way to learn?
It seems that it may be better to learn more like a child- just listening and trying to learn words w/o sitting down with grammar books.
Have you studied/ speak french? What do you suggest?

I speak French as a first language and I must say it is a lot more complicated than English. But to answer your question, I believe you should concentrate on the three principal verb tenses and forget about the ‘Plus-que-parfait, subjonctif present/passe, imparfait, etc…’
If you intend to speak it only, you shouldn’t invest time in learning too much from books IMHO. You should practice by finding others who speak the language, watch french movies, etc.
However if you intent to write and read a lot of french material, I suggest reading things that interest you in french and work from there instead of spending hours learning from boring grammars, you’ll quickly get tired without a teacher nearby!
