Twelve Months In New York

New York City requires little introduction. As a city that is familiar to millions of people across the globe for its iconic edifices, neon-lit intersections and general ‘bright lights, big city’ buzz, the Big Apple towers above almost every other conurbation on earth.

With that in mind, any time is a good time to go to New York. It is a city that never sleeps and a city that always captivates. The winter months tend to be bitterly cold, so pack some woollies if you plan to go any time a month or so either side of Christmas; whilst the summer months can get incredibly hot, so pack the sun cream and wide-brimmed hat as you prepare to pound the pavements of one of the world’s greatest metropolises.

Assuming the weather isn’t a major factor in your decision making, every month offers something special in New York.

January sees the Three Kings Parade take to the streets of Spanish Harlem, when schoolchildren, donkeys and sheep fill the streets in celebration of Christmas, in the tradition of many Latin American countries.

February is worth a visit for the Chinese New Year festival, which is one of America’s biggest celebrations of this great annual event. Fireworks and dancing dragons draw in thousands of thrill-seekers.

Many New Yorkers have Irish ancestry, which is why the St Patrick’s Day parade on 17 of March on Fifth Avenue is such a big event.

Movie fans will like the next two months, with the Havana Film Festival in April screening films from Cuba, the Caribbean, Mexico and other Latin American countries, whilst May heralds the Tribeca Film Festival which is co-organised by Robert De Niro and where many world and US premieres are screened.

June is the month for jazz, with the JVC Jazz Festival presenting more than 40 fantastic shows across the city; though if orchestral music is more your thing, then best hanging on until July, when the Philharmonic in the Park events present great orchestra performances to parks in each of New York’s five boroughs, and all for free.

Art lovers will really dig August, with the Fringe Festival and Howl! Festival coming to town presenting a myriad of visual art, theatre, film and literature to audiences across New York.

September sees the San Gennaro Festival hit the streets of Little Italy, with carnival games and fine food the order of the evening, a tradition that dates back more than 75 years.

America’s biggest public Hallowe’en celebration takes place in New York’s Greenwich Village in October; whilst November is the time to visit for fitness freaks, with the New York City Marathon taking place in the first week of each year’s penultimate month.

The last day of December sees one of the world’s biggest New Year celebrations in Times Square, and this is a fantastic time to savour a truly wonderful city.

There are cheap New York hotels to be found throughout the year but the best tip for any traveller is to book everything well in advance as the city is never quiet. What you do in this splendid metropolis very much depends on when you go as every month has something quite unique to offer.
