Do the Japanese learn to write in romaji?

I am very new to learning the Japanese language, and I intend to learn to write hiragana, because most people who talk of recommending to learn Japanese in that sense, however, are people in Japan learned to use romaji? I suppose it similar to students in America learn to write in the script, but I'm not sure. Or is it taboo, something that is only used to strangers?

Well, not really. We use only because we have to write on computers. But that's all. However, we are taught to learn the kanji to have more students at each level grade. For the hiragana and katakana is like teaching elementary writing.
