Learn French Grammar

Is there an easier way to learn French grammar?

I have been studying French for about a year now at Alliance française de Manille. The teachers I had were (so far) great. I just can’t get the hang of some grammar concepts (like celui-ci, celui-la, celle-ci, COD, COI etc.) I don’t have much difficulty listening to and understanding French audio and French people speaking – in fact I understand them most of the time with no problem at all. It’s the speaking part, sentence formation and being grammatically correct part that I’m worried about. I tend to stutter and be stuck in a painful pause just to form a simple reply. Hope somebody can help. General learning tips, good websites and language reference books, programs and software suggestions will be very much appreciated.

Hi Jay

I bet that you are better at French than you realize! The Alliance usually provide excellent teachers so after a year I am sure that you are better than you think.

However you seem to have hit that wall that most people get stuck on whereby you feel that you are not progressing.

I have 3 kids in the French system and I know that the French are very obsessed with COI and COD and so on. Don’t let it get to you as I bet you can listen, speak and understand French to a good level and probably better than others who do fully understand COI and COD.

The reason why you are stuttering could well be to do with lack of confidence and not because you don’t know how to grammatically form a sentence. Have confidence in what you have already learnt, go out and practice chatting, speaking and listening and don’t worry about errors. The more you hear real French speakers speaking, the more your grammar will correct itself.
