Does anyone do a foreign language at university?
I want to do French and Italian at university. Does this mean that all my credits will be taken up and I won’t be able to do any courses from other subjects? (I’d love to do some courses in sociology, linguistics or Hebrew).
Also, are there any choices in courses in the first year of university because as far as I can tell there aren’t.
Any information about Cambridge, UCL, Manchester or Leeds would be very useful, but information about this topic in ANY UK university is great! Thank you!
I’m sorry, but can someone actually answer me question about a UK university like I asked?
In the USA, many universities are requiring you to do at least two years in a foreign language to graduate from a bachelor’s program. Those credits are included in the total requirement.
As far as your first year, many universities tell you what you have to take the first year and you get little choice. Most of the courses are general in nature and intended to make you a “well rounded” person.
In regard to languages, if you take two or three, you may have to take those classes as extras due to the other requirements of the university in their various degree programs.
You might see if you can find a university that offers a degree in languages. Since the focus is on that, you actually might be ahead wanting to take 2-3 foreign languages as they all might count for credit.
As far as your choice, unless you are in Europe, French and Italian are really not that helpful. In the global market, Chinese and Arabic are much more needed and you would be paid more if you are fluent in those two languages rather than Italian and French.
